Spain’s Abortion King Jailed for Doing Illegal Late-Term Abortions

An abortion doctor, labelled ‘Spain’s Abortion King’ due to his successful chain of abortion centres, has been jailed for 18 months after his practice was found to be carrying out illegal late term abortions.

Dr Carlos Morin’s Barcelona abortion centre was “fully recommended” by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) when it was investigated by undercover journalists in 2004. BPAS referred reporters from the Sunday Telegraph – posing as a couple seeking a late-term abortion – to Dr Morin’s clinic in Barcelona.

Spanish law prohibits abortions being performed after 22 weeks of pregnancy. Despite this, the couple were quoted prices for abortions at 26 weeks and told that the clinic performed abortions up to 30 weeks.

“I don’t have anything to do with your morality”

In 2006, a Danish television documentary used a hidden camera to prove that Dr Morin was performing late-term abortions on women from Denmark. According to LifeSiteNews, Dr Morin was told that “some of the abortions that you do here are of foetuses that could survive outside of the womb.”

“I’m not a philosopher, I’m not here to wonder if a baby would breathe or not,” Morin answered, and added “take your morality and keep it. You can have your morality, and I can have mine. I don’t have anything to do with your morality.”

Dr Morin’s imprisonment comes after almost five years of prolonged court proceedings.

The ‘Abortion King’ was originally prosecuted in 2012 after being arrested and accused of numerous crimes in 2007, after journalists and pro-life groups revealed that late-term abortions were being performed in his clinics with fabricated proofs for risks to the ‘psychological health’ of patients. Further gruesome details emerged of the bodies of the aborted babies being ground up in industrial strength food processors and flushed into the sewer system.

“Fully recommended” by BPAS

When asked about the Barcelona clinic in 2004, BPAS staff told reporters they had “gone there and checked the clinic out”. When asked whether they “fully recommend” the clinic, they replied, “We do, yes”.

A transcript from the Sunday Telegraph’s investigation at the time shows records of numerous phone calls to BPAS and to Dr Morin’s clinic, and then conversations with staff upon arrival at the Barcelona clinic. Both BPAS and staff at the Barcelona clinic repeatedly claim there would not be any “legal problems” if a late-term abortion was carried out.

Despite admitting that that these were not legal under Spanish law, staff assured the undercover reporters that there was a “loophole” they could exploit in the law. They also admitted putting down “gynaecological emergency” as a reason for late-term abortions of healthy babies in order to get around the law.

“There is nothing we are doing that is unlawful”

Staff at the Barcelona clinic told the reporters that BPAS regularly sends patients to them for these illegal abortions.

BPAS is the UK’s largest abortion provider, a multi-million pound company headed by £140,000 per year boss Ann Furedi and is currently campaigning for full decriminalisation of abortion-on-demand up to birth in this country.

At the time, Ann Furedi, BPAS’ Chief Executive, claimed: “There is nothing we are doing that is unlawful. We are simply providing women with international contacts to clinics that can provide them with abortion services.”

However, Dr Morin’s imprisonment has led to renewed calls from pro-life groups for the government to stop funding groups like BPAS.

‘Stop public funding of the abortion industry’

Paul Tully, general secretary of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) said:

“Dr Morin’s obscene money-making from the killing of unborn children is yet more evidence that the abortion industry is a money-grabbing business with no respect for the law.

“BPAS’s endorsement of Dr Morin’s centre means that Ann Furedi has questions to answer. We will be calling upon MPs to put pressure on the Department of Health to stop giving contracts to BPAS.”

This also comes at a time when BPAS has already been heavily criticised for its conduct in campaigning for abortion to be removed from criminal law entirely. Dr Cathy Warwick, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives, has been urged to resign after it emerged that she is also the chair of the abortion giant.
