A Texas substitute teacher has been fired after a high school student said the teacher grabbed a pair of scissors and told her it was “time for an abortion.”

KXAN News in Texas reports the incident occurred during seventh period on Friday, Feb. 18 at the Lehman High School in Kyle, Texas, near Austin.

An unnamed junior student told the news station that she had blown up a balloon during class and put it under her shirt, pretending to be pregnant, when the substitute teacher approached her.

“The substitute came after me with a large pair of scissors and was yelling at me saying ‘time for an abortion,’” the young woman said. “I was shocked, I was terrified and could not say anything. I felt like I couldn’t breathe for a minute.”

The student called her mother, who quickly called the school to complain about the substitute teacher’s behavior, according to the report.

The school district took swift action in the matter and announced Wednesday that the substitute teacher had been fired, the report states.

“Whether or not the gesture was intended as a joke is not relevant. The action shows a lack of judgment that is not acceptable in Hays [Consolidated Independent School District],” district spokesperson Tim Savoy said.

Local law enforcement also looked into the issue but later closed their investigation and referred the matter back to the school district, according to the report.

The Associated Press reports the substitute began working for the school district in November.
