Abortions are illegal in South Sudan, but at least one doctor was performing them anyway. Authorities arrested Ismail Shamim this month after a concerned mother watched her daughter almost die after Shamim aborted her grandchild, the African news site Gurtong reports.

Shamim’s clinic in Param, South Sudan was shut down and his license taken away as authorities investigate the matter, according to the report.

Authorities said they also are investigating other medical clinics in the region to make sure they are in compliance with the law.

A laboratory technician at the clinic said they performed most of the abortions on young, school-age girls. He said many of them had several abortions at the clinic.

Dr. Andrew Adrawa, representing a local medical team, thanked the mother and other concerned parents who reported Shamim’s illegal abortion practice.

“Clinics like this encourage early pregnancy, spread of HIV and death in our society, and I thank the parents and the staff of this clinic for revealing the truth, because if you had not pointed out this, how many girls will be coming in here for such an illegal practice?” Adrawa said.

Abortion advocates often argue that abortion should be made legal to protect women from “back alley” abortionists like Shamim, but in America, where abortion is legal, a number of abortionists also have been charged with illegal activities.

Keep up with the latest pro-life news and information on Twitter.

In the past few weeks alone, LifeNews has reported three American abortionists who have been accused of crimes:

A former Planned Parenthood abortionist named Roger Ian Hardy is accused of sexually molesting several women at his Massachusetts abortion practice. Hardy recently fled the country to avoid charges.

In January, Florida and South Carolina abortionist James Pendegraft was arrested on “drug related offenses.” Pendegraft has been in trouble with the law many times before.

And on Jan. 13, Michigan abortionist Thomas James Gordon, who has a violent criminal history, was arrested for charges of disorderly person, fighting/jostling.

Legalizing abortion does not make conditions safer for women. It just allows more unborn babies to be killed in abortions.
