When his premature baby boy was declared dead, his father wrapped him in layers of cloth and took his body to the morgue.

But 15 hours later, workers at the Chinese morgue heard moaning and discovered that the baby boy was alive.

According to Fox 32, citing a Chinese news report, the baby boy woke up after spending more than half a day in a 10-degree Pan’an morgue in the eastern province of Zhejiang, China.

The baby boy, whose name is An An, was born prematurely in January, weighing just 3 pounds, according to The Daily Mail. He spent several weeks in intensive care before his family took him home to celebrate the Lunar New Year, the report states. At home, An An’s condition quickly worsened, and he was rushed back to the hospital, according to the report.

On Feb. 4, doctors said An An’s heart stopped beating and he went into cardiac arrest. They declared him dead and issued a death certificate. The baby’s father wrapped An An’s body in several layers of clothing and a thick bag before taking him to the morgue, according to the report. The thick, protective layers likely saved the baby boy from the freezing cold temperature of the morgue.

It wasn’t until the morgue workers began to prepare to cremate the little boy on Feb. 5 that they discovered he was alive. The workers said they heard An An moan.

“As soon as I pulled him out of the morgue, I thought I heard noises,” a worker at the morgue told a local TV station. “When I pushed him into the crematory, the noises became louder. I opened the container and saw him moving, so I told the father the baby was still alive.”

An An was rushed back to the hospital, where he remains in intensive care. Doctors at the hospital said they have no explanation for what happened other than it was a miracle.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen this,” a doctor at the Pan’an hospital said. “It’s a true miracle.”

Despite the baby boy’s miraculous survival, doctors said his condition is not good, and he may not live long.
