Hardly a day goes by without another report of violence against pregnant women and their unborn children.

This time, a London man is on trial after he allegedly stomped on his pregnant ex-girlfriend’s stomach and killed their unborn child after she refused to have an abortion.

The Daily Mail reports that teaching assistant Kevin Wilson allegedly told his pregnant girlfriend, Malorie Bantala, that he was not ready to be a father and scheduled an abortion appointment for her. The couple had been together on and off since 2011, and Wilson reportedly called her “selfish” for wanting to keep their baby. When Bantala refused to kill their unborn child, Wilson allegedly planned an attack on her and their unborn baby, the report states.

When Bantala was 32-weeks pregnant, Wilson and a teenager allegedly disguised themselves by wearing motorcycle helmets and attacked Bantala in the streets of South London, the report states. She had been returning home from buying decorations for a baby shower, according to the report.

The two allegedly knocked her to the ground, stomped on her and kicked her stomach with “vicious blows,” as she curled up and tried to shield her unborn baby, according to the report. Despite the disguises, Bantala said she recognized Wilson’s figure and his clothes and shouted his name. The attackers quickly took off on a scooter after neighbors heard Bantala’s scream and rushed to help her, according to the report.

LifeNews previously reported that Bantala had to wait over an hour for an ambulance that never arrived after the attack was reported. A spokesperson from London’s Ambulance Service said, “We were called at 8.16pm on 15 June to Talfourd Place, SE15. We are very sorry that we were unable to send an ambulance before we were cancelled by the police at 9.25pm and are now looking into the circumstances of what happened.”

The June attack killed their unborn baby boy and left Bantala with life-threatening injuries including internal bleeding, according to the report. She later delivered her stillborn baby by emergency cesarian section.

“A post-mortem examination of the foetus found that if it had not been for the assault, there was no reason why he would not have been born alive and a DNA test confirmed that Wilson was the father,” according to The Daily Mail.

Prosecutor Jonathan Rees told the jury this week that Wilson was not pleased when his girlfriend insisted on keeping their baby.

“We say that he took matters into his own hands and decided that he would end the pregnancy by violence,” Reese said. “It was a cowardly and callous attack, each male wearing a motorcycle helmet in an apparent effort to conceal his identity.”

Wilson and the teenager both deny harming Bantala and her unborn baby, the report states.

Even without counting abortion, violence against unborn children and pregnant women is extremely high. Every year in the U.S., more than 300,000 pregnant women experience violence by a partner, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

As LifeNews previously reported, in the United States, George W. Bush signed into law The Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004, which makes it a crime to harm an embryo or fetus at any stage of pregnancy during an assault on a pregnant woman. Some 31 states have similar laws in place that provide for a second crime against the assailant when an unborn baby is killed or injured in the course of an attack on his or her mother.
