Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz took on China’s one-child policy in a Senate speech on Wednesday. The Asian nation recently announced that it would change its one-child policy to a two-child policy that would still include forced abortions, sex-selection abortions and other human rights abuses.

Cruz failed against Chinese officials who forced a woman who was seven months pregnant with her second daughter to have an abortion.

“In America, we should stand with victims of oppression,” said Sen. Cruz. “In America, we should stand with Christians being persecuted by the brutal communist totalitarian dictatorship. In America, we should stand for women’s rights, for women being forced to commit forced abortions. These are horrific acts of brutality. They are inhumane. They are contrary not only to American values, but to human rights across the globe, and they are carried out as a matter of policy.”

Reggie Littlejohn of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers told LifeNews.com she was pleased Cruz tackled the human rights abuses associated with China’s population control.

“I am so thankful to Senator Cruz for raising the issue of China’s One Child Policy and other human rights abuses so forcefully, by renaming the plaza in front of the Chinese embassy to honor jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. Years ago, Sen. Cruz’s family was detained and tortured in Cuba, so he has first-hand knowledge of the horrors of living under communism,” she said.

Cruz’s comments on China begin at 11:51 in the video.
