Three year old Jac’Lynn Richardson of Mundy Township, Mich. could have drowned over the summer. But she didn’t. And instead of reporting on a tragedy, the media outlets are reporting about the how Jac’Lynn was saved by her 12-year old sister, Carin, who has Down Syndrome.
Yahoo! News reported that the Richardson family has had a pool for 16 years, but has never had an incident until July. Jac’Lynn sneaked off into the pool to retrieve her swim tube and began to drown.
Her sister Carin though fortunately reacted quickly. The rescue feat is impressive on its own, but it’s even more so considering the mother of the girls, Tomarra, mentioned that those with Down Syndrome don’t always react the fastest. Carin reacted quickly though, and wasn’t even scared.
Carin pulled her younger sister into the house where their mother helped her cough up water and their older sister called 911.
Tomarra also told Yahoo! that while Carin wasn’t scared to save her, she was once she saw her mom return home from the hospital without her sister, who the doctors wanted to keep an eye on.
Carin’s family members all expressed how proud and grateful they were. Tomarra says they have “always been very proud of Carin,” and that “words cannot express my gratitude to her for quickly moving to save her sister.”

In a touching statement, Tomarra also shared how it is her hope that the story about her daughter will show that “even those with disabilities are capable of doing great things — including saving a life.”
Carin is quite the hero, but the reality is that many babies who receive a prenatal diagnosis of Down Syndrome are aborted. She’s lucky to have been born in many instances.
Almost all of those with Down Syndrome live happy lives though, 99 percent of them. And, almost as many of their siblings respond to such siblings with affection, at 96 percent. It’s not hard to see how Jac’Lynn will certainly be affectionate with Carin, her older sister and her hero, who just happens to have Down Syndrome.
