In July, Samuel Easterbrook pleaded guilty to bodily harm and criminal damage charges after he beat his pregnant girlfriend in an attempt to kill their unborn child. The Daily Mail reports that Easterbrook stabbed, kicked and punched Kira Brooks while screaming that he was going to “get the baby out of her.” Thankfully, Brooks and her unborn daughter survived the violent attack.
Unfortunately, Easterbrook had been violent before but Brooks thought he could change and decided to stay with him. She also said her boyfriend seemed excited about the pregnancy initially and told her he couldn’t wait to be a father. However, one day she came home to find him dousing her clothes and belongings with bleach. Then Easterbrook destroyed her television and tore up the scan of their unborn baby before attacking her.
Brooks said the following about the assault: ”I really thought he was going to kill both me and our baby. He was screaming that if I didn’t want to be with me then I couldn’t have his baby, the next thing he had a knife to my throat before he stabbed me in my arm. Thankfully my little girl is a miracle and somehow survived the ordeal unharmed, now I can’t wait to meet her knowing Sam’s behind bars where he can’t hurt either of us.”
The judge involved in the case, Jeremy Griggs, told Easterbrook: “This is as unpleasant as it gets. It appears to be a deliberate attempt to cause your child to be aborted. Thankfully, that has not happened.”
He also issued a restraining order banning him from contact Brooks. The attorney who defended Easterbrook, Ann Bellchambers, said her client is now remorseful.

Brooks concluded, “I still can’t believe what happened that day, but thankfully I’ve never had any contact since. I want to raise awareness to let other women suffering in abusive relationships to get out and get help before it’s too late. I still worry from time to time but now I can breathe again knowing he’s behind bars.”
As LifeNews previously reported, some women who are attacked by violent men are not as fortunate as Brooks. For example, in Texas, a 14-year-old girl was raped by a member of her own family and then beaten to induce abortion after he realized she was pregnant. The beating lasted six grueling hours and her baby died in the attack. Reports revealed that the young girl was eight months pregnant when she was assaulted.
In the United States, we have laws that make it a crime to harm an embryo or fetus at any stage of pregnancy during an assault on a pregnant woman. In April 2004, George W. Bush signed into law The Unborn Victims of Violence Act and 31 states have similar laws in place. The 2004 bill states “Whoever engages in conduct that violates any of the provisions of law… and thereby causes the death of, or bodily injury to, a child, who is in utero at the time the conduct takes place, is guilty of a separate offense under this section.”
