In Virginia, pro-life activists are celebrating after finding out that an abortion facility that has been open for 27-years has closed down. Mike from Manassas told 40 Days for Life: “I bring you good news of great joy! Our Prayers have been heard! After 27 years of abortions, Amethyst Women’s Health Center has closed their doors!”

He added, “This is truly God’s work through many, many hands in our community. Light always conquers darkness … this is indeed a great blessing for our Manassas community.”

According to Fox News, Amethyst is closing because the owner has decided to retire. The 76-year-old widow wanted to remain anonymous but told Fox her reason for shutting down. She said, “When you are in this line of work, you know, I have fought a battle for 27 years. And I did it with love in my heart to help the women. But comes a time in life that you retire.”

Now, there are only three abortion facilities left in Northern Virginia and those may be affected by health regulations that were implemented by former pro-life Gov. Bob McDonnell.

Stephen Phelan of Human Life International said the following about the regulations: “What those regulations are were a common sense agreement between a lot of different groups bipartisan approved. These same regulations apply to every clinic that does the same level of procedure. There’s no special targeting of abortion clinics here. So why the special exemption? What makes them so unique that they can’t meet the same health and safety regulations that protect women that other clinics have to meet?”

Operation Rescue President Troy Newman was thrilled to hear that Amethyst was closing but mentioned concerns about pro-abortion Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s administration. He said, “It is a mercy that this shoddy abortion mill is shutting down. But if McAuliffe has his way, we can only expect that conditions at abortion clinics will only continue to degenerate. If Virginia really cared about the health and safety of women over the monetary interests of abortion businesses, they would require high medical standards and not subject ladies to seedy clinics where authorities turn a blind eye to abuses.”

He added, “Health inspectors are notoriously bend to the whims of whoever happens to be in power. That is exactly what happened in Pennsylvania under a pro-abortion administration that looked the other way while Kermit Gosnell operated in squalor, killed two patients and committed serial killings on babies born alive during illegal late-term abortions.”

As LifeNews previously reported, in June and December of 2012, a 48-page inspection report of Amethyst Health Center for Women listed multiple deficiencies including infection prevention citations, storage and dispensing of drugs citations, quality assurance citations, maintenance citations, and local and state code standards citations.
