In New York, a 33-year-old woman threw her newborn daughter out a seventh-story window and now faces murder and manslaughter charges.

The Daily Mail reports that Jennifer Berry’s daughter was born alive and tossed out her apartment building with her umbilical cord still attached. The woman’s boyfriend, Giovanni Johnson, claimed he didn’t know his girlfriend was pregnant and was in the other room when she killed their baby. He said, “I didn’t know (about the pregnancy). I didn’t know any of this. I’ve been cleared of all charges.”

Yesterday, chief medical examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson said the autopsy revealed that the girl died of blunt force injuries and the child’s death was ruled a homicide. Witness Sammy Batista said, “The baby looked like it was new, it was on the floor covered in blood. It was terrible. It hurt my heart.” In a sad irony, Berry previously worked as a child welfare worker in New York City.

According to the New York Daily News, other witnesses said Berry looked dead inside when she was arrested. 29-year old Kenneth Bolton explained, “The devil was in her eyes. It was more like (she was) not human. She was deranged, like she was lost. You know, when someone has a look in their eyes like they don’t know where they are?”

Initially, Berry denied that she was pregnant but later claimed that she had given birth to a dead baby at her apartment. New York City’s children services department has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

As LifeNews previously reported, in a similar case in China a newborn girl was thrown from a 17-story apartment complex with her umbilical cord still attached.

The infant was found on a busy pavement lying in a pool of blood. According to the Central European News agency, neighbor On Chiang said he “spotted something on the ground and didn’t immediately recognize it.”

He added, “I saw the blood first, and then I realized it was the body of a tiny baby. I called police and told them what I had seen, and said that I couldn’t see anybody in the building that might have thrown the child, nor was anybody else around. It was really shocking.” Later disturbing images surfaced on Chinese news websites and social media but were deemed to graphic to publish. Police are investigating the death and believe that the mother was a teenager with mental health issues.
