Doctors told Norelle Smith when she was 26 weeks along that she needed an abortion to save her life. But Smith said no.

Now her daughter Natasha Smith, whose birth was induced 14 weeks early when her mother developed a life-threatening condition, is celebrating her 11th birthday.

From the Metro:

But her daughter was delivered alive – to the astonishment of the medical team at the former Queen Mother’s Hospital in Glasgow.

A decade on, Smith and fiancé Sandy Cameron spoke about a milestone birthday they could not believe they would be celebrating.

During the pregnancy Smith was diagnosed with toxic pre-eclampsia. Even if Natasha survived the induced birth, her parents were warned she would be severely brain damaged.

Instead, she is thriving in the top reading group in her class at school and enjoyed her tenth birthday with a meal in town with her friends.

Cameron, 38, said his daughter ‘carries with her the fighting spirit’ that kept her alive. ‘We are very proud of her,’ he added.

Although abortion advocates often push for legalizing abortions wholesale in every situation under the pretense of saving women’s lives , these kinds of stories make it clear that just because medical experts believe an abortion is necessary to save a mother’s life doesn’t mean that’s really the case.
