Republican presidential candidate and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry has elaborated on his thoughts about the Planned Parenthood videos showing their top executives haggling over the price of aborted babies’ body parts.
The Washington Examiner reports that he said the abortion giant is acting “outside the bounds of humanity” and “our criminal laws.” He added, “I think anyone who’s seen the videos of the Planned Parenthood is offended, you know, regardless of where they may be on the issue of choice or protecting life.”
In July, Perry was one of the first to express outrage over the footage that became the focus of a national debate about Planned Parenthood’s abortion and organ harvesting business. He said, “The video showing a Planned Parenthood employee selling the body parts of aborted children is a disturbing reminder of the organization’s penchant for profiting off the tragedy of a destroyed human life. It is because of stories like this that I signed legislation defunding Planned Parenthood in the state of Texas – to protect human life and the health and safety of Texans.”
Unsurprisingly, Perry was one of the pro-life lawmakers Hillary Clinton criticized in her video announcing her support for Planned Parenthood. She said: “Unfortunately, these attacks aren’t new, they’re more of the same, we’ve seen them in Wisconsin where Governor Walker defunded Planned Parenthood and left women across the state stranded with nowhere else to turn. We’ve seen them in Florida where Jeb Bush funneled millions of taxpayer dollars into abstinence only programs while gutting funds for crucial family planning programs. And we’ve seen them in Texas where Gov. Perry drastically cut funding for breast and cervical cancer screenings and then signed legislation that forced health centers across the state to close their doors.”
As LifeNews previously reported, Governor Perry responded to Clinton and said, “Secretary Clinton should explain to the American people why she supports an organization that rips apart and sells the body parts of aborted babies. I am proud to have defunded Planned Parenthood in Texas, and support Congressional efforts to defund them at the federal level. I have also called for the revocation of Planned Parenthood’s federal non-profit status. My policies in Texas have proven that you can protect women’s health while also protecting human life.”
Perry is known as a pro-life champion because of his work in passing pro-life legislation in Texas, including the omnibus pro-life bill that requires abortion facilities to meet higher safety standards and bans late-term abortion. The legislation, known as H.B. 2, closed down many of Texas’ abortion facilities because it mandated that all clinics meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers in the state. In September 2013, he received an award from Texas Right to Life for his dedication to the pro-life cause.
We successfully passed laws banning the use of tax dollars for abortion procedures in the state of Texas.
We successfully passed laws requiring both parental notification and parental consent to their daughter’s abortion, ensuring parents will be involved, ready to provide much-needed guidance and advice at the most critical of moments.
We successfully passed a law that prohibits abortion without the mother first having a sonogram, because we believe that unborn children deserve the respect of recognition before their lives are tragically cut short.
We took those steps to help ensure that those making the decision between life and death make the most informed, and the most responsible, decision possible.
This recent legislative session was among the most combative we’ve seen recently, as we saw pro-abortion forces resort to any means necessary to thwart our efforts to save lives.
