Woman Who Cut Mother’s 7-Month-Old Unborn Baby Out of Her Womb Pleads Not Guilty

A  two-week trial date has been scheduled for early 2016 in the case of Dynel Lane, accused of savagly stabbing Michelle Wilkins last March and cutting out her 7-month-old unborn child.

Wilkins miraculously survived but her baby, already named Aurora, died.

Lane showed little emotion Thursday as she pled not guilty.

She is charged with eight felony counts, including first-degree unlawful termination of pregnancy, attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault. Lane is not charged with murder because, according to District Attorney Stanley Garnett, there was no evidence the baby lived “for some period of time” after she was cut out from her mother’s womb.  The coroner’s office  ruled the death of Wilkins’ unborn child to be “fetal demise.”

Attempts to enact an Unborn Victims of Violence act foundered this past May in the Democrat-controlled House after passing in the Republican-controlled Senate.

Reporting for the Denver Post, Jesse Paul provided some additional details about that horrific March 18 day.

We knew the basics–that Lane allegedly beat and stabbed Wilkins after she responded to a Craigslist ad for baby clothes and then literally cut the baby out of Ms. Wilkins.

Wilkins, covered in blood, was somehow able to protect herself from further attack by locking herself in a room. She called 911 and told the dispatcher, “Please help. I’m bleeding out.” The Los Times further reported

When officers arrived at the home, they found Wilkins in a bedroom in the basement, lying on a bed with a large amount of blood on her and around her. A small knife was found underneath the bed, police said. She was rushed to the hospital to undergo emergency surgery.

Meanwhile Lane’s husband, who knew nothing of the horrific crime, rushed Lane and the baby to the hospital where Lane’s story fell apart. Tragically, the baby died.

But Paul added additional, even more chilling details. He wrote

Wilkins told a Longmont police detective that as Lane held her down and tried smothering her with a pillow, she briefly thought that compassion could end the brutal attack, according to testimony during the May hearing.

“I love you,” Wilkins said as she struggled in the basement of Lane’s home, pinned down on the bed of one of her attacker’s daughters.

“If you love me, you’ll let me do this,” Lane replied, according to Wilkins’ account to police, before cutting out Wilkins’ fetus.

A very sympathetic newscaster on the local ABC affiliate talked about the hearing [www.denverpost.com/news/ci_28527865/dynel-lanes-pleads-not-guilty-longmont-baby-removal]. Twice she talked about Wilkins’ “unborn baby” but then bizarrely ended by describing how Lane is accused of “pinning Wilkins to the floor and cutting the fetus from her stomach.”

Lane is being held at the Boulder County jail in lieu of $2 million bond.
