In 1999, Joy Veron was paralyzed in an accident that saved her children’s lives. She and her three young children, Anna, Chloe and Elliott, were vacationing in Colorado when the unthinkable happened. They were parked at a mountain cabin by a cliff and Joy went to sign some paperwork on the rental while the kids watched from the window. Somehow the vehicle, which was in park, shifted gears and started rolling back toward the cliff.
According to the Daily Mail, in 2004, Joy told Oprah about what she did next. She jumped in front of the vehicle to try and stop it, or at least slow it down. She said, “I just was throwing myself in front of it just to put something in its path. I remember thinking, ‘I didn’t make it in time and I’m getting run over. I’m going to hear a crash pretty soon.’ I tried to stop it with my hands, which, of course, I couldn’t. And I remember feeling it begin to run over me. I fell backwards, and the front of the car caught me by the heels.”
Unbelievably, the car ran over her but slowed down the vehicle enough to give her father time to jump in and activate the emergency break. Miraculously, Joy didn’t die in the accident but she was paralyzed from the waist down.
However, now her three children are alive and thriving. To this day, she says she wouldn’t change anything about her decision to jump in front of the car because her kids are alive. In 2012, her daughters Anna and Chloe published a video on YouTube thanking their mother for her amazing sacrifice.
