A Wisconsin man has been charged with first-degree sexual assault of a child under the age of 12 after authorities learned he raped and impregnated his girlfriend’s 10-year-old graddaughter. She will have the baby in may since Wisconsin law prevents abortions after 24 weeks and the pregnancy wasn’t divulged until after that point.

Derrick Guider, 39, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, had moved in with his girlfriend and her 10-year-old granddaughter eventually moved into the same home not long afterwards. Shortly thereafter, he began raping the little girl. She told authorities how the rape occurred — saying Guider entered her room and told her “This is how you make money.”

Unfortunately, when the girlfriend was informed of the sexual abuse, she didn’t believe her granddaughter and did not follow up on a a suggestion to see a doctor about her granddaughter being pregnant — which brought the girl past the point at which abortion is legal in Wisconsin.

Although the rape is a tragedy, aborting the baby would add another tragedy on top of an already horrific situation. In many such cases, the baby is placed with child protective services for an adoption or foster care.

Here’s more on the case:

In December, when the girl told her grandmother that Guider was “messing with her,” she told her that she didn’t believe her and to stop lying.

In January, the grandmother took the girl to a pediatrician, who suggested that they go to the hospital. For reasons unknown, the grandmother never followed through on the doctor’s request.

In March, the girl’s mother took her daughter to the hospital where they concluded that she was pregnant and expecting to deliver at the end of May.

Wisconsin laws forbid abortion after 24 weeks, even in cases involving rape.

Guider faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted.
