On March 26th, Global BC News’ chief meteorologist, Kristi Gordon, shared with her viewers that she’s been receiving hate mail from viewers criticizing her pregnant body. Gordon decided to respond to the hate mail on her Global News Blog.
She said, “While I was relieved to let you in on my big secret back in January (because it meant I didn’t have to hold in my tummy anymore and pretend my waistline wasn’t slowly getting bigger), I was also a little anxious. My anxiety was based on the experience of going through my first pregnancy. I thought it would only be a matter of time before the negative emails would start coming in. Last time when I was pregnant and slowly growing, I received emails telling me to ‘cover up’, ‘be more professional’, ‘not wear horizontal stripes’, and how irresponsible I was to be wearing high heels.”
Unfortunately, Gordon was right and she did receive hate mail from viewers.
She said that one comment during her current pregnancy was the worst. The comment came in a hand-written letter from a number of people known as “The Group.” It said, “Nowhere on North America TV have we seen a weather reader so gross as you. Your front end looks like the Hindenburg and rear end a brick poop (insert swear word here) house. We now turn off Globel (yes, GLOBEL and not Global). Cover up or take time off.”
Thankfully, Gordon’s co-anchors urged her to ignore the hate and shake it off, by taking a tip from Taylor Swift. Then her colleagues starting flicking the hate mail off the table and reminded her that she shouldn’t have to hide her pregnancy. Global BC also defended her, saying, “To all viewers, thanks for all your feedback. We’ve read them all. We support Kristi, her wardrobe choices and all women who work while pregnant.”
