In Louisiana, Absolute Concrete Solutions has agreed to build a $4.2 million dollar Planned Parenthood facility that has been delayed in being built due to opposition from pro-lifers. The owners of Absolute Concrete Solutions, Melvin and Linda Backes, told New Orleans area pastor, Bill Shanks, that they are building the facility because of money.

Pastor Shanks said, “[Melvin] told me that this [order] is just money, [and that] ‘If you give me $20,000, I’ll tear up the contract.” But Backes wife added, “I’m for Planned Parenthood and I’m for abortion. Unbelievably, she also told Shanks, “If we let all these little kids live, they’ll just grow up and kill us.”

In May 2013, Planned Parenthood broke ground in building their 8,000 square foot facility in New Orleans and promised to be open by the end of 2014. However, as LifeNews previously reported, Louisiana Right to Life launched a campaign exposing Planned Parenthood’s abortion business, and the Archbishop of New Orleans, Gregory Aymond, wrote a letter urging people to stand for a peaceful New Orleans, not one with more abortion. He said that the Archdiocese would not cooperate with the evil that takes place at Planned Parenthood in any way.

Aymond wrote, “We cannot be silent in view of the grave injustice presented by the abortions that will be performed at the proposed Planned Parenthood facility. The archdiocese is obliged to remind every person and organization involved in the acquisition, preparation and construction of this or any abortion facility that they are cooperating with the evil that will take place there. For this reason, the archdiocese, including its churches, schools, apartments for the elderly and nursing homes, will strive in its privately funded work not to enter into business relationships with any person or organization that participates in actions that are essential to making this abortion facility a reality.”

Additionally, earlier this year the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) denied Planned Parenthood’s request to perform abortions because they said they did not demonstration a need for another abortion facility in Louisiana.

In a letter dated Jan. 8, 2015, DHH Secretary Kathy Kliebert wrote to Planned Parenthood: “Your application failed to establish the probability of serious, adverse consequences to recipients’ ability to access outpatient abortion services if you are not allowed to apply for licensure.”

According to Louisiana Right to Life, in October 2014, Planned Parenthood argued in a 74-page document that New Orleans needs 2,844 more abortions on an annual basis. Benjamin Clapper, executive director of Louisiana Right to Life and leader of the Nola Needs Peace Coalition, said the following after reviewing Planned Parenthood’s brief:

“Over the past few years Planned Parenthood has avoided almost all mention of abortion when discussing its new facility currently planned for Claiborne Avenue in New Orleans. They have focused instead on the need for women’s healthcare. Now, in a shockingly blunt and business-like manner, Planned Parenthood is making a case to the state of Louisiana that the New Orleans area needs 2,844 new abortions every year, and that Planned Parenthood is the business to sell those abortions.

He concluded, “As we have said from the outset, more Planned Parenthood in New Orleans will lead to more abortions in New Orleans. This document makes that abundantly clear. Our city needs more peace and more authentic healthcare, not a mega-facility to sell abortion to our citizens.”
