Rick Santorum: “We Need to Wake Up the Church” to Confront Abortion

Many observers have called 2014 the “Year of the Bible Movie” and it’s easy to see why. A vast array of faith-based films have released this year, some to significant success including Heaven is for RealIrreplaceable and Son of God.

But Rick Santorum says we can do more than entertain with films. “Yes, we make films for the church,” he said recently at The Heritage Foundation. “We need to wake up the church!”

As CEO of Echolight Studios, Santorum aims to do just that with the new documentary film One Generation Away. His group invites local churches to host a free screening of the film on January 13, 2015.

Featuring over 70 leading voices on faith, law and public policy, One Generation Away relies on compelling, first-person stories filmed on-location to reveal its major theme: complete religious liberty creates good for all of society.

The message comes through clear in the segment recapping Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the Supreme Court case recently decided in favor of the arts-and-crafts chain which employs over 16,000 Americans.

“Life begins at conception,” says Hobby Lobby President Steve Green in the film. “Never in our 237 years as a republic has any government decree made us fund the taking of innocent human life as a condition of continuing business.”

In the court case, Hobby Lobby successfully defended its policy of not covering in employee insurance plans four drugs and devices that can end the life of a pre-born baby. Following months of sustained prayer centered around the case, Bound4LIFE team members joined the crowds outside the Supreme Court who hailed the decision as a victory for life and liberty.

Notably, the film also features those who hold a limited view of religious liberty and its value. “The government is forcing these poor believers to do something that goes against their conscience?” asks Dan Barker, President of Freedom from Religion Foundation. “Millions of good Americans think birth control and abortion are a blessing.”

Others in One Generation Away take the opportunity to rebut Barker’s claims. It features a cross-section of leading pro-life voices, including Gov. Mike Huckabee, Dr. Alveda King (niece of Martin Luther King Jr.), Tony Perkins, Alan Sears (of Alliance Defending Freedom), Stephen Mansfield, Jennifer Marshall and Ryan T. Anderson of The Heritage Foundation, Russell Moore and Bishop Harry Jackson.

Watch for these leaders to reply with grace and a firm understanding of American law when those on the other side, including Mikey Weinstein and Peter Singer, make their case.

Today serving as Co-Chair of Patriot Voices in addition to his role with Echolight Studios, Rick Santorum is best known as a former U.S. Senator and 2012 Presidential Candidate — so he knows a few things about getting attention for a cause. His plan to distribute One Generation Away is raising eyebrows in Hollywood.

“Many churches all over the country have the ability of theatrical-quality projection and sound,” Santorum noted to The Hollywood Reporter. “Instead of trying to encourage our church audience to go to the theater, how about our church audiences go to church?”

Clearly he is committed to spreading the message of One Generation Away to people of faith nationwide; ministry leaders are encouraged to sign up their church, university group, or ministry at no charge for the January 13, 2015 simulcast.

Join us at Bound4LIFE in praying for the church: for believers to wake up, understand what the Bible says on protecting the vulnerable, and exercise their freedoms for life.
