An Iowa couple is shocked to be new parents after the husband was told he was sterile and the wife had no idea she was pregnant at the time she went to the hospital complaining of stomach pains.

Misty Beaty and Scott Steele had absolutely no idea Misty was pregnant until the moment she gave birth to Briggs Beaty on Monday morning. Misty said she didn’t experience any pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness or weight gain despite being full term.

briggsbeatyMisty told local media she as completely unaware she was pregnant.

“I didn’t have the weight gain, didn’t have the nausea and none of the morning sickness that goes along with pregnancy. Nothing,” said Misty.

When Misty and Scott arrived at St. Luke’s Emergency Room on Monday Morning both were shocked to discover that Misty was 9 months pregnant. The surprised parents were the proud parents of a baby boy just 12 hours later and Briggs Beaty was born without complications and is 7 lbs 14 oz of joy.

Scott Steele was told that he was sterile due to having colorectal cancer five years ago.

“I was stunned, it didn’t even seem real. I just sat there, like, you (doctor) have to be wrong,” Beaty said.

briggsbeaty2The shock and surprise came for a couple of reasons.

Scott Steele, a KHAK radio morning personality until a few weeks ago, was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer about five years ago. He’s gone through extensive chemotherapy, and relapses, and was told years ago that without medical intervention and the saving of sperm in advance he would probably never become a father.

Misty Beaty has some medical issues as well and a history of spotty periods. So she said she never suspected pregnancy months ago and never expected to give birth.

But little Briggs Beaty, all 7 lbs., 14 oz., arrived on the scene to confound those predictions.

“I’m still in disbelief. Part of me is so excited and I feel so blessed. And part of me is like, really?” Steele said.
