In May 2001, Christopher Duffley was born at 26 weeks, weighing only one pound and 12 ounces with cocaine in his system. He was blind, autistic, and suffered from a host of other medical ailments. However, Christopher survived and was placed in foster care.

christopherduffleyHis aunt and uncle, Christine and Steve Duffley, adopted him when he was 14-months old. They said the following about welcoming Christopher into their home:

“As we prayed and discerned about having Christopher come into our home, it was remarkable to see how open our children were to having another sibling, knowing that he was not “normal”.

Steve and I both felt that by inviting Christopher into our family, we were also obeying the voice of God.  In the bible it says “Whoever welcomes one such child for my sake welcomes me”.  Jesus wasn’t kidding when he shared this with his disciples, as recorded in Matthew’s gospel.  We also felt that we were modeling to our children what our faith professes, the gospel of Life.

The Duffley’s said that while they had challenges raising Christopher, they also had great joys. One of their joys was finding out that Christopher could sing with perfect pitch.

Now, Christopher shares his music with thousands at churches, sporting events, and at gatherings across the country.   His most recent performance was at World Outreach Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where he sang “I Can Only Imagine.” He can play piano and also has picked up a little bit of the guitar, trumpet and drums.

Although our society often sees children with disabilities as disposable, Christopher’s story shows the world they are created in God’s image, just like the rest of us.
