A woman in Finland reportedly killed five of her unborn babies, or allowed them to die, and kept their bodies in boxes in a basement cupboard. Her actions are reminiscent of a woman in Utah who killed seven of her own children.
From the AP report of the woman in Finland:
Officers found the bodies in “badly smelly packages” Tuesday in a basement cupboard of an apartment building in the western city of Oulu after they were alerted to the scene by emergency services.
“A woman arrived there as officers had begun their investigation, saying she had put the packages into the cupboard,” Leinonen told the AP. “She said she’d given birth to the stillborn babies between five and 10 years ago at home.”
Leinonen said the woman could not give a clear motive for keeping and storing what he said appeared to be fetuses for so long.
He declined to identify her except to say that she was a local Finnish woman, married with children, who had moved into an apartment in the building in Oulu, some 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of Helsinki, a few months earlier. He said no other family members were suspected of being involved.
In the United States,Megan Huntsman killed six of her babies and packed them in boxes.
Huntsman told police that “she either strangled or suffocated them immediately after they were born,” the Associated Press reported. “She wrapped their bodies in a towel or a shirt, put them in plastic bags and then packed them inside boxes in the garage of her home south of Salt Lake City.” Huntsman, 39, is charged with six counts of murder; she told authorities the seventh baby was stillborn.
Police believe Huntsman, 39, gave birth to the babies then killed them over the past decade and they arrested her after the grisly discovery. They found the babies following a call from Huntsman’s ex-husband about a dead infant found inside a Pleasant Grove home that Huntsman lived in until 2011. Officers arrived and found the body of a newborn infant, who appeared to be full term.
