Canadian MP Backs Away From “Abortion is a Human Right” Motion After Massive Pro-Life Opposition

It was with full confidence that Niki Ashton, the NDP Status of Women critic, announced earlier this week that she was putting forward a motion calling on the House of Commons to recognize a woman’s right to choose abortion as a fundamental question of equality and human rights.

ultrasound4d14Now, mere days later, it seems as though she is reconsidering as the NDP has decided not to put Ms. Ashton’s abortion motion up for debate during Thursday’s opposition debate.

While we were expecting a debate in the House of Commons this week Wednesday or Thursday, it looks as though Ms. Ashton and the NDP underestimated the push back from a youthful, energetic pro-life movement.

The mission of WeNeedaLAW.ca is to mobilize the grassroots. In the past 36 hours thousands of people who are plugged into our campaign have answered the call to communicate respectful messages to their Members of Parliament.

Ms. Ashton’s pro-abortion views are not representative of the majority of Canadians who view fetuses as vulnerable members of the human family that ought to be protected at some point.

What we are seeing is a breakdown of a cognitive dissonance whereby Canadians are becoming better informed as to the impact of abortion on pre-born children and the complications it presents for women who choose to terminate their pregnancy. Obviously Ms. Ashton and the NDP have yet to realize that their views are not in sync with most Canadians.

We will continue building support for laws protecting pre-born children and look forward to the debate in Parliament, whenever that should occur.
