Yesterday, LifeNews celebrated moms for Mother’s Day on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. We spotlighted moms who rejected abortion to save their babies or went to great lengths to protect their unborn or recently-born children.

Then today, we unfortunately had to profile a woman from Virginia who received only a three-year suspended sentence for drowning her newborn baby in the toilet.

simoesThankfully, there are more of the former – moms who are willing to give up their own lives for their baby — than the latter. And this story the web site Rare profiles is just one of those kinds of stories of heroic moms.

Sadly, this mother is in a very grim medical situation as a result of her bravery:

One brave Massachusetts mother celebrated Mother’s Day in the hospital, after saving the life of her son but not knowing if she will ever walk again.

“I’m having a good day,” Christina Simoes told CBS. “My whole family is here, my son is here. It’s magical, I mean there’s nothing that feels better than having everybody here with me.”

Simoes of Haverhill, Mass., was in her home May 7 when a fire broke out, leaving the 23-year-old and her 18-month-old son, Cameron, stranded on the second floor balcony.

She said her next move was simply instinct, “I didn’t think about it. All I was thinking about was getting him out of there. He mattered way more than I did.”

Simoes reported flames only 10 feet away when she decided to jump of the balcony.

“I grabbed my son and I held him as tight as I could to my chest and I gave him a kiss and a hug, and I told him I loved him and I jumped out the window,” Simoes said.

Unfortunately, Simoes may never be able to walk again, but her selflessness saved her child’s life.
