You needn’t be a political insider to know that when Politifact declared President Obama’s promise that “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it,” the Lie of the Year last week, that designation would make its way into political ads against Democrats who voted for ObamaCare. But in the following week?
Yup, that’s what has happened, in this case New Hampshire Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen. According to Chris Cillizza, editor of the Washington Post’s influential “The Fix,” the conservative group Ending Spending
“is running an ad in New Hampshire that will be replicated endlessly by Republican candidates and groups in the 2014 midterm election.”
Why is it so powerful? The contents, of course, which we’ll discuss in one minute. But there’s the setting.
Huge swathes of the American people have already turned against ObamCare/the President’s handling of healthcare. Polls (show as did the Washington Post/ABC News poll Cillizza cites) show upwards of nearly half believe ObamaCare (the “Affordable Care Act”) will make the health care system worse, only 19% better. Republicans, of course, overwhelmingly disapprove of the President’s handling of healthcare but so do 70% of Independents!
The ad, produced by GOP media consultant Larry McCarthy touches all the bases. The first voiceover from the narrative cuts to the chase:
“On Health Care, Jeanne Shaheen didn’t tell the truth.”
The first image is footage of Sen.Shaheen reciting the standard pro-ObamaCare talking points, starting with the “You can keep your insurance if you like it.” Simultaneously, in the middle of the screen, is the reminder that Politifact dubbed that assurance the Lie of the Year. Then…
“A narrator points out that 20,000 New Hampshire residents have had their insurance canceled and that the Affordable Care Act offers only a single provider on the state’s individual market,” Cillizza writes.
And then the ad’s coup de grâce: “Next November, if you like your Senator, you can keep her. If not, you know what to do.”

Not a single Republican voted for ObamaCare: this disaster is owned lock, stock, and barrel by Democrats.
Citing the public’s rejection of Obamacare, Cillizza concludes
“Add it all up and you have a very scary situation for Shaheen — and any other Democrat, which is almost all of them, on the record supporting the ACA. Get used to this ad. You are going to see it thousands of times — in various forms — before 2014 is over.”
