Obama Criticized for Misleading Voters on Abortion During Debate

President Barack Obama escaped a second debate with the moderator doing nothing to bring up his extensive pro-abortion record, which includes pushing abortion or abortion funding more than 200 times as president.

Americans United for Life Action president Charmaine Yoest says Obama has done more than any other president to push abortion funding and that his record of promoting it via Obamacare should receive more attention.

“The President said during the debate that he was concerned about people being denied their choice for contraception, but in fact, through Obamacare, all Americans are forced to participate in subsidizing life-ending drugs and devices mislabeled as contraception, using the force of law to push people to embrace his choice,” she said. “Numerous lawsuits have been filed since the passage of Obamacare because of the pending violations of Americans’ First Amendment Rights of Conscience — their rights to act as their consciences dictate and to be free from the force of government officials. Americans should not be forced to bear the costs of life-ending drugs in healthcare or to put aside their beliefs to fund the abortion industry.”

“Few know that the nation’s largest abortion provider, the highly profitable Planned Parenthood receives more than $1 million in taxpayer subsidies a day,” she continued. “And a misunderstanding of the abortion-centric Planned Parenthood means that few understand that Planned Parenthood does not provide comprehensive medical care for women. For example, Planned Parenthood does not perform mammograms — they only take a cut, like a middle man, for referring women for the life-saving test.”

“As Obamacare is the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade, repealing that massive program is an absolute priority as abortion-related policies are intertwined throughout the entire law,” Yoest told LifeNews.

While Obama talked about bipartisanship, Yoest says de-funding Planned Parenthood would be a good bipartisan contribution — but it is something Obama steadfastly opposes.

“Defunding the abortion-industry is a bi-partisan savings. We learned during the healthcare debate, that 7 in 10 Americans — self-identified as pro-life and pro-choice — do not want to see their tax dollars going to subsidize abortion. Cutting the money going to Planned Parenthood is a savings most can agree on,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Susan B. Anthony List condemned President Obama’s false statements on Planned Parenthood and contraception during the debate at Hofstra University.

“President Obama needs to get the facts straight – he touts Planned Parenthood as a leading health care provider but in truth it is America’s largest abortion business – and does not perform mammograms,” SBA List president Marjorie Dannenfelser said. “This oft-repeated myth has been repeatedly debunked and it’s time the President stop misleading the American people in an effort to buoy his top political ally.”

“The President’s policies on abortion – including his administration’s HHS mandate which forces religious employers to pay for coverage of abortion-inducing drugs against their deeply held faith and beliefs – fly in the face of mainstream Americans. President Obama is trampling religious freedom and the rights of conscience in the name of so-called women’s health care – abortion-inducing drugs are not health care,” Dannenfelser told LifeNews.

The myth that Planned Parenthood provides mammograms has been repeatedly debunked, most recently by Casey Mattox of Alliance Defending Freedom who pointed out that according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, no Planned Parenthood clinic in the country is authorized to perform mammograms under the federal Mammogram Quality Standards Act.

Dannenfelser said Obama’s positions on abortion are out of step with mainstream Americans.

Polling released by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, the education and research arm of the SBA List, found that 77 percent of Americans (80 percent of women) support banning sex-selective abortion. Similarly, a recent poll commissioned by the National Right to Life Committee found that 63 percent of Americans (70 percent of women) support legislation to ban abortions past the point at which unborn children feel pain. President Obama has refused to support either measure.
