The initial reaction from pro-life groups is in and they think pro-abortion Vice President Joe Biden misled voters when it came to the offending nature of the HHS mandate that compels religious groups to pay for abortion-inducing drugs.

Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser had the following comments:

“Tonight, Congressman Ryan explained the pro-life position with clarity and candor. His thoughtful response outlined how many of us in the pro-life movement have come to recognize the dignity of the unborn child – through both our faculties of faith and reason. The Romney-Ryan ticket is clearly committed to protecting American women and unborn children – as well as our conscience rights and religious freedom.

“Vice President Biden grossly misled the viewers and brushed over legitimate objections by people of all faiths to this administration’s unprecedented assault on religious organizations and individuals. The HHS preventative services mandate forces Americans of faith and conscience to violate their beliefs and be directly responsible for paying for insurance programs which cover abortion-inducing drugs. Coverage for such drugs is not preventative women’s healthcare and the vice president’s response tonight demonstrated a shocking disregard for our first freedom.”

Maureen Ferguson Senior Policy Advisor for The Catholic Association also weighed in:

“Tonight we saw two radically different approaches to integrating faith into public policy. Paul Ryan beautifully articulated core Catholic teaching on the right to life, as he spoke of seeing the heartbeat of his unborn daughter at 7 weeks, and the Obama Administration’s assault on religious liberty. These are core issues that can never take a back seat to any issue for Catholics. Vice President Biden completely misrepresented the HHS mandate — he was shockingly deceptive and factually incorrect, which is why the Obama administration is being sued by Catholic Charities, hospitals and educational institutions like Notre Dame. The Vice President was in direct conflict with Catholic teaching on protecting innocent life as he defended the policies of the most pro-abortion President in history.”
