National Pro-Life Cupcake Day is an actual thing, and I like it. A lot. And not because I love cupcakes. I do love cupcakes, but I’m getting married this weekend and I’m still determined to lose 28 pounds, so the cupcakes aren’t really the point.
National Pro-Life Cupcake Day is October 9. It’s really simple. Basically, you bake cupcakes and you give them to people. And when they’re all, “Hey, what’s the deal with the word ‘Life’/tiny candy fetus/little baby feet on this cupcake?,” you can be like, “It’s National Pro-Life Cupcake Day. This cupcake is a delicious symbol of the sanctity of life.” Or whatever. You probably have your own style.
Joe Baker of Cupcakes for Life reminds us, “Remember that it’s about the conversation, not the cupcakes.” He also warns, “Try not to debate abortion while handing out cupcakes. Do everything that you can to share the message of life without it turning into a big argument.”
This is why I love Cupcakes for Life and this annual event. I love that it’s about offering a gift to people and asking nothing in return. There’s no big confrontation. It’s “Here’s a cupcake. I believe unborn babies have a right to life. Have a lovely day.” I think there’s something beautiful about that.
Cupcakes for Life doesn’t give specific directions for how to conduct your National Pro-Life Cupcake Day because they want you to be creative, but they do suggest maybe taking donations for a local pregnancy resource center, or their partner organization, the fantastic Dallas-based mobile pregnancy screening center Save the Storks.
Joe also reminds us that if you can’t make October 9 a cupcake day, do it literally any other day of the year. Why not? Do it once a month if you can. It’s a great way to gather young people, fellow students, or members of a pro-life organization to do something different. And it’s a terrific way to get young pro-life activists used to talking to strangers before the difficult challenge of the sidewalk.
Here are some ideas that I think would be a great way to celebrate National Pro-Life Cupcake Day:
1. Turn your table presentation into a birthday party, and explain that you’re celebrating the birthdays of babies that never get to have one because of abortion.
2. Label your cupcakes with a year, starting with 1973. When asked what the date means, talk about the number of children who lost their lives each year since Roe v. Wade became law.
3. If you’re going to be handing out cupcakes at a place where you think people might be confrontational or want to argue, bring your kids or young siblings to hand out cupcakes and break the ice. People tend to behave better around cute little kids. They’re also a great reminder of the innocent lives lost to abortion. A visual aid, if you will!

4. Use a “precious feet” pin as a guide to make tiny candy or frosting feet for your cupcakes. You can explain that these feet are the actual size of a baby at ten weeks’ gestation to help people understand the aborted fetus is more than a “blob of tissue.” This is a great way to present a simple fact to your cupcake recipients without being argumentative.
5. If you’re going to use images, use non-confrontational ones such as intact fetuses or fetal models. Remember, the point of Cupcakes for Life is to greet people with kindness, not to be off-putting.
