The conclusion of a new Gallup poll on the issue of abortion is this:  the issue of abortion gives Mitt Romney an advantage over President Obama because pro-life voters are much more passionate than pro-abortion voters.

Although some political pundits dismiss the issue of abortion, Gallup confirms, “Seventeen percent say they will vote only for candidates for major office who share their own views on abortion, one of the higher rates of abortion-centric voting seen in presidential election years since 1992.”

“According to the Sept. 24-27 Gallup poll, another 45% of voters say abortion will be one of many important factors they consider in voting, whereas 34% don’t see abortion as a major issue,” it indicated. “Approximately one in six registered voters (17%) say they will vote only for candidates for major office who share their views on abortion — as high a percentage as Gallup has seen in recent election years.”

In a race that could be decided by 1-2 percent of the vote, pro-life voters give Romney, who is pro-life, a two percentage point advantage.

“According to the Sept. 24-27 Gallup poll, another 45% of voters say abortion will be one of many important factors they consider in voting, whereas 34% don’t see abortion as a major issue,” it noted. “According to the Sept. 24-27 Gallup poll, another 45% of voters say abortion will be one of many important factors they consider in voting, whereas 34% don’t see abortion as a major issue.”

Gallup also confirmed the pro-life perspective has given an advantage to pro-life presidential candidates in the past. When they won, they did so in part because of pro-life voters. When they lost, they would have lost by larger margins if not for pro-life voters.
