Members of the hacking group Anonymous took down the Vatican website today in a protest against Catholic doctrine, including its pro-life teachings.

“Anonymous decided today to besiege your site in response to the doctrine, to the liturgies, to the absurd and anachronistic concepts that your for-profit organization spreads around the world,” the hackers wrote in a message left for Catholic Church leaders on the web site that claims to be the official Anonymous web site. “This attack is not against the Christian religion or the faithful around the world but against the corrupt Roman Apostolic Church.”

The web site has been inaccessible for much of Wednesday afternoon and evening and Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, confirmed the attack in response to queries form the Associated Press but would not comment further or say how long Vatican officials would need to get the web site back online.

Hackers previously went after the Catholic Church last Augus when they took down the website of World Youth Day.
