An Iowa man has been arrested for forcibly aborting his girlfriend’s baby. According to police, Yoirlan Tome-Rojas gave an abortion drug that he purchased on the Internet to his pregnant girlfriend.

The woman became suspicious about her miscarriage after she discovered e-mails that the defendant had sent concerning instructions on how to use the drug. Police say that Tome-Rojas obtained the medication from someone in Florida and asked over the Internet how to administer it. It is not clear what specific drug was used.

Tome-Rojas’ faces charges of conspiracy to commit non-consensual termination (a felony), assault while participating in a felony and a second count of  assault for allegedly pushing the woman when she confronted him with what she had discovered in his e-mails.  His arraignment was set for Feb. 6 in Buena Vista County District Court.

Pressure from the father is commonly cited as a reason why women have abortions. Many times, reluctant fathers try to pressure their partners into aborting a baby they do not wish to be responsible for.

In extreme cases like this one, the man takes the situation into his own hands, violating the woman’s rights and killing the child. Ironically, the same baby on whose behalf the charges are being filed could have been legally killed in an abortion clinic on the same day that he or she was killed by Tome-Rojas. In that case, it would not have been a felony, but rather a legally sanctioned act.
