A new national survey from Gallup shows Americans favor repealing the Obamacare health care law opposed by pro-life groups because it allows abortion funding, fails to protect conscience rights and sparks rationing concerns.
The poll follows news that the Supreme Court will take the major case Florida and more than two dozen states filed to overturn the individual mandate that compels Americans to purchase health care under the law. It also follows revelations from internal documents showing the White House knew the executive order Obama signed would not sufficiently stop taxpayer funded abortions under Obamacare.
Gallup’s new survey finds adults favor repealing the law by a 47-42 percentage point margin — a split that would be higher if registered voters or likely voters were surveyed instead. The possible repeal of the healthcare law is highly important to Americans on both sides of the question, with 66% of those favoring its repeal saying it is very important that Congress take this action, and 60% of those who believe it should be kept in place saying it is very important that Congress not repeal it.
The poll found Republicans favor repealing Obamacare by an 80-10 percentage point margin, while independents favor it 48-43 percent and Democrats oppose repeal on a 64-21 percent split.
Americans have consistently opposed Obamacare and, in October, Gallup found 40% of Americans saying passage of the healthcare law was a good thing and 48% a bad thing.
“Americans remain divided on whether it is the federal government’s responsibility to make sure all Americans have healthcare — 50% say it is, while 46% disagree — the same basic pattern found in 2009 and 2010,” Gallup noted about the new poll. “Prior to 2009, a majority of Americans in Gallup’s yearly updates said it was the federal government’s responsibility to make sure all Americans have healthcare coverage.”
“In response to a separate question, 56% of Americans say they prefer a system for providing healthcare based mostly on private health insurance, rather than one that is government run. This response is similar to what Gallup found last year,” it continued.
Jay Sekulow, the chief counsel for the pro-life legal group American Center for Law and Justice, is behind a brie that will have more than 100 members of Congress supporting Florida’s effort to overturn Obamacare in courts. He says he is seeing the opposition to Obamacare grow.
“The response has been overwhelming. In the first 24 hours after the Supreme Court announced it would determine the constitutionality of ObamaCare, nearly 40,000 Americans expressed their opposition to this flawed law and signed on to our upcoming amicus brief urging the Justices to declare the entire law unconstitutional. “Our position is very clear: the entire law – including the individual mandate, which forces Americans to purchase health insurance or face a penalty – must go. This is an unprecedented power grab by Congress – an unconstitutional requirement that forces Americans to purchase something – in this case, health insurance,” Sekulow continued.
“When the Supreme Court hears more than 5 hours of oral argument, every single issue involving ObamaCare will be front-and-center. The high court will consider every aspect of this law,” Sekulow concluded. “The fact is this individual mandate translates to a cost of citizenship in the United States. Either you purchase what the government tells you to, or you face severe penalties imposed by the Internal Revenue Service.”
