An abortion center in southern California has closed down — thanks in part to the pro-life prayer campaign 40 Days for Life, where local residents prayed for the center to shut down and helped women find alternatives.

Shawn Carney, the campaign director for 40 Days for Life, shared the news of the center closing today in an email to activists involved in the national prayer effort.

“David Bereit, 40 Days for Life’s national director, and I just got back from a whirlwind trip to Los Angeles, California, with great news to share,” he said. “The abortion facility in La Puente — a suburb in East L.A. where five 40 Days for Life campaigns have been conducted — has just closed its doors and gone out of business.”

“The moment we heard the news, David and I knew we had to be there for the victory celebration rally with the local volunteers who tirelessly worked and prayed to make this day a reality, and it was amazing” Carney continued. “This now makes fourteen abortion centers that have gone out of business during or following 40 Days for Life prayer vigils outside their doors.”

Eva Winchell, 77, operated the abortion business at 1840 N. Hacienda Drive, Suite 13 in La Puente where she had Mohamed Bararsani, who has been on medical probation, doing abortions. The California Catholic indicates “Bararsani was sentenced to probation for committing acts of dishonesty, gross negligence against a female patient, and aiding and abetting the unlicensed practice of medicine.”

The web site indicated the manager for the abortion business said it was getting no clients and the center is now vacant.

Carney has posted a video of the celebration with local pro-life advocates that shows the closed abortion center — including the abandoned surgical tables left by the abortion practitioner; how the simple faith of one person — the local campaign leader, Yvonne — inspired hundreds of others to get involved in La Puente and beyond; and the joyful reactions of the dedicated team of local volunteers upon hearing that the abortion center where they had prayed was closing its doors forever.

“And best of all, halfway through the video, you will meet one of the many babies saved from abortion through God’s grace and the many hours of prayer that blanketed this abortion facility over the years,” he says.

The Fall 40 Days for Life campaign is slated to begin soon and Carney says more abortion businesses may close thanks to those events.

“Perhaps this same thing could happen in your town. The next coordinated 40 Days for Life campaign runs from September 28 to November 6,” he said. “Almost every local 40 Days for Life campaign starts because of the faith and vision of one person. In your community, might that one person be you?”

Earlier this year, Family Planning Associates, one of the largest abortion center chains in California, closed the abortion business it runs in Newport Beach. Operation Rescue president Troy Newman informed LifeNews about the closing of the FPA abortion facility and he said the Newport Beach location is one “where pro-lifers have been sidewalk counseling and praying for decades” and “its closure is an encouragement that we are winning.”

Family Planning Associates was founded by the notorious abortionist Edward Allred, who once claimed to have personally aborted at least 500,000 babies and famously stated during an interview with the San Diego Union that he wished he could set up a free abortion clinic in Mexico to “stem the tide” of illegal immigration. Allred retired in 2005, according to Newman, and sold FPA, which operates 20 abortion centers in two states.

Newman said Irving “Bud” Feldkamp III purchased the abortion business from Allred and now, his son I.M. Feldkamp, IV, continues to operate it. With the closing of the Newport Beach clinic, FPA now consists of 14 surgical abortion centers and a fifteenth that dispenses the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug.

With FPA closing up shop in Newport Beach, it joins the closing of all five Golden Gate Community Health locations in the San Francisco area. Formerly known as Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, the GGCH abortion centers closed after financial problems and mismanagement forced national Planned Parenthood officials to disaffiliate the local affiliate.
