Pelosi Tells Pro-Abortion Lunch: GOP Waging “War on Women”

Using militaristic terms at a dinner sponsored by one of the nation’s most polemic pro-abortion groups, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi condemned Republicans who want to de-fund the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

At a Monday gala sponsored by NARAL at the Intercontinental Hotel in San Francisco, Pelosi condemned what she called the Republican “war on women” — the de-funding effort that she said was the biggest attack on abortion since Roe v. Wade. Pelosi told the 700 pro-abortion activists that Republicans clamoring for abortion funding cuts are engaging in an “ideological harangue” not just against abortion, but family planning, and they need “a lesson in the birds and bees.”

“If you don’t want to terminate a pregnancy, you might want to prevent it. Family planning funding? People really get this. Does that give you any picture of how insulting their mentality is?” she said.

NARAL president Nancy Keenan also attacked pro-life Republican members of Congress, saying, “Republicans are not only going into the personal lives of women and families – they’re overstepping into the private sector.”

She also said she doubted the sincerity of a handful of pro-abortion Republicans who have said they may vote against efforts to cut off taxpayer funding for the nation’s biggest abortion business.

“It’s not what they say,” she said. “It’s how they vote. And what you’re seeing at the end of the day is a vote to defund Planned Parenthood – and that’s wrong.”

Although Pelosi and Keenan claim the abortion de-funding efforts hurt women, Marjorie Dannenfelser of the Susan B. Anthony List says it is Planned Parenthood who hurts women by pushing abortions for pregnant women rather than offering them legitimate pregnancy help and support.

In an email to LifeNews, she said: “For weeks now Planned Parenthood has been flooding the radio and TV waves with their lies, touting the many “services” they provide for women and girls. Not once have they mentioned that 98% of their “services” for pregnant women are abortions — or that they‘ve recently been caught in the act of aiding and abetting the alleged human trafficking of girls as young as 14 years old. It’s time for Washington to hear the truth.”

“Estimates show that in 2011 alone, Planned Parenthood has already destroyed the lives of over 77,000 unborn babies while pocketing over $82 million in taxpayer funding,” Dannenfelser added. “Enough is enough. Pro-life America rejects being forced to subsidize this corrupt and scandal-ridden abortion business.”

Yesterday, pro-life advocates played the latest piece on the game board in the race to de-fund Planned Parenthood. A coalition of pro-life groups announced the launch of a $100,000 radio ad campaign in Washington and a $90,000 television ad campaign to go along with it that features Abby Johnson, the former director of a Texas clinic run by Planned Parenthood.

Johnson exposes the true corporate realities behind Planned Parenthood’s business model, one which requires an “abortion quota” to increase revenue. The ad, which starts Tuesday and runs through Thursday of next week, hits the airwaves in the Washington area on WTOP-AM and WMAL-AM, two radio stations lawmakers listen to frequently for the latest news, as Congress comes under increasing pressure to strip Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding in the next version of the Continuing Resolution funding the federal government and federal programs.
