For Democrats on Abortion, Votes Have Consequences

An historic election day has left us with a most promising pro-life majority in the House of Representatives.

The bellwether health care bill separated the sheep from the goats and gave the best legislative indication of real pro-life heroes — and those who gave lip service but betrayed their constituents.

They can’t say we didn’t warn them; votes have consequences.

Fifteen out of twenty self-described pro-life Democrats were defeated on Tuesday sending a clear message that Americans don’t want their hard-earned tax dollars funding abortions through surreptitious legislation like Obamacare.  Pro-life voters across the country sent their Representatives who betrayed them packing and replaced them with authentic pro-life leaders who will actually vote pro-life across the board.

Those defeated include Brad Ellsworth (IN-SEN), Steve Driehaus (OH-01), Kathy Dahlkemper (PA-04), Bart Stupak (Retired, MI-01), Alan Mollohan (Primary defeat, MI-01), Baron Hill (IN-09), Paul Kanjorski (PA-11), John Salazar (CO-03), Jim Oberstar (MN-08), Bob Etheridge (NC-02), John Boccieri (OH-16), Chris Carney (PA-10), John Spratt (SC-05), Ciro Rodriguez (TX-23), and Charlie Wilson (OH-06).

During the SBA List “Abortion is NOT Health Care” tour earlier this year, we stood outside district offices across Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania and encouraged pro-life Democrats to stand with their constituents and vote against any health care bill that contained taxpayer funding for abortion.

We told them that we were prepared to defend them if they stood with us, but on the flip side, would defeat them if they caved.  Cave they did and sealed their fate by their own vote.

Our lone stalwart and true pro-life Democrat Rep. Dan Lipinski from Illinois, who held fast and did not support Obamacare, won his reelection, proving once again that votes have consequences.

Now our work continues to hold the newly elected feet to the fire and make good on promises to pass pro-life legislation like the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” introduced by Congressmen Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL), establishing a consistent and permanent government-wide ban on taxpayer funding of abortion.

And the “Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act” introduced by Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN) to ensure that our tax dollars don’t go to organizations that perform abortion, like Planned Parenthood, through Title X family planning grants.  Let’s keep the victory moving forward.
