Washington Senate: Final Polls Show Rossi-Murray Tossup

The final two polls in what is one of the most competitive Senate races in the nation show pro-life candidate Dino Rossi and pro-abortion Sen. Patty Murray each winning in the state of Washington.

Every time PPP, a Democratic polling firm, has conducted polls in the Washington Senate race this year it has found the race to be within two or three percent and its final poll is no exception. However, this time, for the first time, it shows Rossi leading Patty Murray, by a 50-48 margin.

Rossi is winning 93 percent of the Republican vote compared with Murray’s winning 91% of Democrats. That means independents, as they are in so many races across the country, are making the difference for the GOP here. Rossi leads Murray with them by a 54-42 margin.

The most worrisome number for Murray within the poll, beyond her small overall disadvantage, is that, among voters who say they’ve already returned their ballots, Rossi’s advantage is wider at 52-47.

“Murray’s ability to keep the race close is predicated on the 24% of respondents who have not yet done so returning their ballots. That group
supports her by a 51-45 margin,” PPP says.

“A lot of the time in a wave election all of the close elections end up tilting away from the party in power at the end,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “If that proves to be the case this year Patty Murray could be one of the victims of it. This is going to be a very close race that we may not know the outcome of for several days.”

PPP surveyed 2,055 likely Washington voters from Friday through Sunday.

However, the last Fox News-Rasmussen poll of the race shows Murray with a 49-47 percentage point lead. The poll, conducted entirely on Saturday, shows 95 percent of voters in both camps certain they will vote for their preferred candidate.

But the poll also shows 48 percent of Washington voters saying their vote “will be to express opposition to Obama administration policies” — not a good sign for Murray — and 51 percent of Washington voters say they have a negative view of Obama’s job as president.

Earlier this month, the Susan B. Anthony List endorsed Rossi, because he is pro-life and because Murray is endorsed by Emily’s List, which funds candidates and politicians who support abortion and forcing taxpayers to fund it.
“The Susan B. Anthony List is proud to support Dino Rossi in his bid to defeat Senator Patty Murray,” said SBA List president Marjorie Dannenfelser in a statement to LifeNews.com.

“Patty Murray has voted repeatedly in favor of taxpayer funding of abortion and has been rewarded with more than $538,000 in campaign contributions from the pro-abortion lobby,” Dannenfelser explained. “Washington taxpayers deserve better than Patty Murray. They can count on Dino Rossi to keep their hard-earned tax dollars from paying for abortions. He is the better candidate for women and all Washingtonians.” [related]

Murray received a zero percent rating from the National Right to Life Committee in the 111th Congress — including votes against the Nelson-Hatch Amendment to prevent tax dollars from paying for abortions through the health care bill and a vote against the Mexico City Policy to prevent federal dollars from paying for abortions and promoting abortion policies overseas.
