Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — The nation’s largest abortion business is one of the biggest promoters of contraception and birth control and makes money from doing more than one-fourth of the nation’s abortions. Despite that, several Planned Parenthood affiliates have received federal funding for "teen pregnancy prevention."

When President Barack Obama gained control of the White House, he moved quickly to begin zeroing out funding for abstinence education programs and shifting the funding to groups promoting "comprehensive" sexual education.

Last week, Obama’s "Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative" doled out some of the tens of millions of dollars in funding to these groups.

Jeanne Monahan, director of the Center for Human Dignity at the Family Research Council, says Planned Parenthood affiliates were awarded millions in grants either directly or as a subcontractor.

"Although the program will replace abstinence education grants that expire today (the last day of the fiscal year), a number of anti-abstinence groups are among the major recipients. Included in that group is Planned Parenthood, which will receive $4.5 million dollars, specifically in the states of Florida and Washington," she said.

The Portland Oregonian newspaper also indicates Planned Parenthood in the Northwest has received $20 million for its programs in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

"The last group in the world I would want teaching young people about sexuality is Planned Parenthood. Perhaps parents in Washington and Florida will take this issue to their state health departments," she added.

Valerie Huber, Executive Director of the National Abstinence Education Association told LifeNews.com that abstinence education programs applied for funds — however few received funding.

She said the Obama administration’s funding "demonstrates a disturbing imbalance in a process touted to be open to abstinence education programs. NAEA remains concerned over the de facto defunding of Abstinence Education."

Monahan, a former employee at the Office of the Secretary in the Department of Health and Human Services, told OneNewsNow that Planned Parenthood is actively pushing an "anti-abstinence" agenda and wanting to make sexual education available to children as young as 10.

"It’s promoting, in their words, all sorts of different kinds of sex with a variety of different partners," she said, "and not at all…preserving the idea that marriage is the only appropriate and healthy place for a sexual relationship."

Huber added, "Risk avoidance remains the most reliable and scientifically sound approach for youth. The sexual health of America’s youth is too important to be addressed by a public health model that shortchanges primary prevention.”

The pregnancy preventing funding going to Planned Parenthood comes at a time when two pro-abortion senators introduced a bill that would permanently cut federal abstinence education funding.
