Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) — Carelton University students were arrested on the campus of this Canadian college today after ignoring the university’s limits on their free speech rights. The students are members of Carelton Lifeline, a student pro-life group that wanted to put up a huge display against abortion on campus.

University officials attempted to make the students take their display, which included graphic pictures, to a closed room where they would not be readily seen.

The students refused and held their display on public property instead of caving on what it considered a censorship attempt.

Jim Hughes, the president of the Campaign Life Coalition, a national pro-life group in Canada, objected to the arrests.

"The truth about the killing of children in their mothers’ wombs is once again being hidden in a back room, while the reality of what happens in every abortion continues daily," he said. "Truth is the first casualty in every war and in this war on the unborn the truth is being suppressed."

"Universities which have always prided themselves as being institutions of free thought have now become facilities where only the most liberal thoughts are allowed to be presented," he added.

CLC is asking Canadians to contact the dean of Carelton University and demand that the students be released and that their display be given the same respect as other topics at the University.

Bryan Kemper, an American pro-life activist, also weighed in on the dustup.

"This kind of thing is happening more and more on both American and Canadian campuses as students’ free speech rights are being stripped away," he said.

"These courageous students were showing the truth about the slaughter of their innocent brothers and sisters in the womb. They were willing to stand up and be a voice for those who will be silenced before they can ever speak at all. These students are heroes, yet they are being treated like criminals," he continued.
