Providence, RI (LifeNews.com) — Independent candidate Lincoln Chafee, who is pro-abortion, holds a very slight lead over Democrat Frank Caprio in the first Rasmussen Reports post-primary survey of Rhode Island’s gubernatorial contest. The state’s pro-life group has endorsed Republican John Robitaille.

The Rasmussen survey of likely voters shows Chafee picking up 33% of the vote, while Caprio is right behind with 30% support. Robitaille comes in third with 23%, and Moderate Party candidate Ken Block runs last with five percent (5%) of the vote. Nine percent (9%) remain undecided.

Last month, Caprio posted a 38% to 32% lead over Chafee. Robitaille picked up 20% support at that time. Block was not included in the survey.

Since February, support for Chafee has ranged from 32% to 39%. Caprio, who ran uncontested in Tuesday’s Democratic primary after Attorney General Patrick Lynch dropped out of the race, has earned between 27% and 38% of the vote during the same period. Robitaille, who defeated Victor Moffitt with 70% support in the GOP primary, has polled between 19% and 25% since February.

The poll found 59% of Rhode Island Republicans support Robitaille, while just 49% of Democrats back Caprio. Chafee, a one-time Republican U.S. senator, draws 22% of the GOP vote and 34% of Democrats. Among voters not affiliated with either major political party, 38% back Chafee; 28% support Robitaille, and 14% favor Caprio.

In July, the political action committee of Rhode Island State Right to Life announced an endorsement for governor and the pro-life group says it is supporting Robitaille.

“John Robitaille has promised that, as Governor, he will ensure that every citizen will have a voice at the State House. And we are confident this promise applies to human beings at every stage of development," RIRTL director Barth Bracy told LifeNews.com.

He said he urges pro-lifers throughout Rhode Island to unite in support of Robitaille’s gubernatorial campaign.

RIRTL PAC chair Lisa Torrado added, “Innocent human lives hang in the balance. We believe that, like Gov. Carcieri, John Robitaille will stand up for the inalienable Right to Life of the unborn, the elderly, and the disabled.”

Rhode Island Right to Life has also spoken out against pro-abortion Rhode Island General Treasurer candidate Gina Raimondo and Emily’s List’s endorsement of her.

And it announced its support for Dr. Ernest Greco for Congress in the 2nd congressional district. Greco will take on Democrat Jim Langevin, who campaigned as a pro-life Democrat but has voted for abortion funding and embryonic stem cell research. https://www.lifenews.com/state5208.html
