Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) — A new Rasmussen Reports poll of likely voters in California shows a movement of six points away from pro-abortion Sen. Barbara Boxer and in the direction of pro-life challenger Carly Fiorina. When leaners are excluded, the new poll shows Fiorina has gained 5 percent on her opponent.

The latest survey of likely voters in California shows a dead heat of 48-47 percent in Fiorina’s favor with two percent preferring a minor party candidate and three percent undecided.

These numbers show a slight shift from results with leaners found two weeks ago, when Rasmussen had Boxer leading Fiorina 49% to 44%. Leaners are those who initially indicate no preference for either of the candidates but answer a follow-up question and say they are leaning towards a particular candidate.

Without leaners included, Fiorina leads the pro-abortion champion 47% to 42% — an improvement over the virtual tie between the two candidates two weeks ago.

The Rasmussen survey of 750 likely voters follows a new SurveyUSA poll of 569 likely voters that found Fiorina on top by two percent at 48-46.

The poll had other good news for Fiorina as it shows her supporters are more solid in their support for her than Boxer’s backers are for her candidacy. Seventy-four percent (74%) of Fiorina voters are already certain of how they will vote this November, as are 69% of those who support Boxer, a member of the Senate since 1993.

Fiorina is backed by 91% of Republicans in California, while Boxer draws support from 86% of Democrats and Fiorina holds a slight edge among voters not affiliated with either major political party, Rasmussen shows.

Forty-eight percent (48%) of all voters in the state view Boxer favorably, while 50% regard her unfavorably. But this includes 20% with a Very Favorable view of her versus 41% who see her Very Unfavorably. Fiorina is viewed favorably by 55% of California voters, including 17% with a Very Favorable opinion. Thirty-seven percent (37%) see her unfavorably, with 25% Very Unfavorable.

The Boxer campaign dropped a new 15-second Internet ad blasting Fiorina on abortion last month — as abortion is an issue Boxer’s people believe will help her in a state that does not follow the rest of the nation in opposing abortion.

The ad bashes Fiorina for saying, “I absolutely would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade if the opportunity presented itself" in a KTKZ – AM interview in January. It highlights several endorsements Fiorina has received from pro-life groups and pro-life leaders.

The California Pro-Life Council, the state affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee, has endorsed Fiorina as has the Susan B. Anthony List.

SBA List president Marjorie Dannenfelser told LifeNews.com Fiorina is pro-life.

"From a pro-woman, pro-life perspective, there could be no greater contrast. She embraces and advances the rights of women and unborn children, following in the footsteps of the earliest women in politics," she said. "Susan B. Anthony and the early feminists understood, as Carly Fiorina does, that undermining the rights of one never advances the rights of another."
