Madison, WI (LifeNews.com) — Republicans will decide their U.S. Senate nominee in a September 14 primary and the two candidates they are choosing from fare very differently against pro-abortion incumbent Sen. Russ Feingold. Republican challenger Ron Johnson does much better against Feingold than his opponent Dave Westlake.

The U.S. Senate race in Wisconsin between Johnson and Feingold is a tie while Westlake trails the abortion advocate.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters finds Johnson earning 47% of the vote, while Feingold, who is seeking a third term, picks up 46% support. One percent prefers some other candidate, and five percent are unsure.

"Two weeks ago, Johnson held an identical 47% to 46% lead. These findings show little change since Johnson, a plastics manufacturer and businessman, entered the race in late May," Rasmussen said. "Support for Johnson has ranged from 44% to 48%. In those same surveys, Feingold has consistently picked up 46% of the vote."

When pitted against another GOP hopeful, businessman David Westlake, Feingold holds a modest 47% to 40% lead. Six percent favor another candidate and 7 percent are unsure. These findings, too, have shown little fluctuation since early February.

Johnson is favored by 89% of Republicans, while Westlake earns support from 75% of GOP voters in the state. Feingold receives support from roughly 86% of members in his own party in both match-ups. Among unaffiliated voters, Johnson leads Feingold by 10 points, but the Democrat edges Westlake when he is the GOP challenger.

Wisconsin Right to Life announced in June that it favors Johnson and WRTL PAC chair Bonnie Pfaff said the endorsement of Johnson is based on his strong belief in the sanctity of human life, his exceptional leadership background and his outstanding credibility.

"Ron Johnson is an individual who believes that protecting the most vulnerable members of the human family is the right thing to do," said Pfaff. "He will work in Congress to help create a culture of life, where every human being is welcomed and protected."

"We believe Ron Johnson is an individual who has the values, background and experience to serve all the citizens of Wisconsin in an exceptional manner. The Wisconsin Right to Life Political Action Committee is very proud to make this endorsement," said Pfaff.

Johnson was endorsed at the May state Republican Convention.
