Carson City, NV (LifeNews.com) — A new Mason-Dixon poll sponsored by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and 8NewsNow shows the Senate race in Nevada essentially tied. It has pro-abortion Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid leading pro-life candidate Sharron Angle by two percentage points.
Reid edged out Angle 46 percent to 44 percent in what is the best showing for both candidates, whose negative ratings are sky high as they go after each other.
Only 5 percent of voters were undecided, two percent wanted another minor candidate and three percent of voters said "none of the above" when asked.
Some political observers say the question of Reid’s key status in the Senate could determine the outcome of the race, but the poll found 51 percent said his position as the head of the Senate is not too valuable to give up while 45 percent said it is valuable enough to retain.
"More people are saying we don’t need him there" in Washington pollster Brad Coker told the Las Vegas newspaper. "That’s the kind of number that may foreshadow what the vote might look like when we get to the end. I think this race is more a referendum on Harry Reid than about Sharron Angle."
If the race becomes about Reid rather than Angle, political observers say that favors the pro-life candidate over Reid, who is primarily responsible for moving the pro-abortion, government-run health care bill through the Senate.
That health care bill could help Angle as the poll found 53 percent oppose the law while only 39 percent support it. That compares to 52-38 percent two weeks ago, showing Reid’s efforts to sell the bill have not worked.
Reid is seen unfavorably by 51 percent and favorably by 40 percent in the poll and another 9 percent have a neutral view of him. Angle is viewed unfavorably by 45 percent and favorably by 37 percent while 17 percent have a neutral view.
That, theoretically, gives Angle more room to define herself and Reid less of an ability to define himself to voters who don’t like him.
Reid is seen as too extreme by 36 percent while Angle is seen that way by 41 percent.
Angle picked up endorsements from National Right to Life and the Susan B. Anthony List pro-life groups after she won the Republican primary and Nevada Right to Life backed her as well.
The State of Nevada is fortunate to have a champion of the unborn running for United States Senate against Harry Reid, Jeremy McNeil, director of its PAC, told LifeNews.com. While a state legislator, Sharron Angle consistently voted according to her pro-life convictions and sponsored significant pro-life legislation.
Sharron Angle and Harry Reid stand in stark contrast on the issue of abortion. While Harry Reid asserts he is pro-life, his actions belie his words, McNeil said. Reid has helped spearhead the Obama Administrations radically pro-abortion agenda, including blocking an amendment to prevent the federal government from subsidizing health plans that cover abortion on demand and voting to fund the U.N. Population Fund, which has significant ties to government-coerced abortions in China.
