Madison, WI (LifeNews.com) — Republican front-runner Scott Walker and former Congressman Mark Neumann, the other GOP hopeful, both lead pro-abortion Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett in the race to be Wisconsin’s next governor. Both pro-life candidates hold leads in the latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of likely voters.

Walker holds an eight-point lead over the abortion advocate — picking up 49% support, while Barrett earns 41% of the vote. Three percent support another candidate and six percent are undecided.

Walker, the county executive of Milwaukee County, reached 50% support for the first time two weeks ago against Barrett, who had 43% support in that poll.

Barrett remains in a virtual tie with Neumann, who is seek as less likely to get the Republican nod to face him. Neumann picks up 45% to Barrett’s 43%. Two weeks ago, the race was 45% to 44% in favor of Barrett.

"Walker has consistently proven to be the slightly stronger GOP candidate against Barrett, with support back to early February in the narrow range of 46% to 50%. In those same surveys, support for Barrett has ranged from 40% to 44%," Rasmussen pollster Scott Rasmussen said. "Neumann has picked up 43% to 47% of the vote against Barrett, who has earned 39% to 46% in those matchups."

Barrett has no strong opposition for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and Democratic Governor Jim Doyle is not standing for reelection. Voters in both parties will pick their nominees in September 14 primaries.

While Walker earns 90% support from Republicans, Neumann picks up 81% support. Barrett is backed by roughly 80% of those in his party in both match-ups. Both Republicans pick up over 50% support among voters not affiliated with either major political party.

Last month, Wisconsin Right to Life issued endorsements for both Walker and Neumann — whom Pro-Life Wisconsin has endorsed as well.
"Both Scott Walker and Mark Neumann have a deep and abiding respect for the value of human life," said WRTL PAC chair Bonnie Pfaff.

She added, "The election of either of these exceptional candidates would greatly contribute to building a culture of life where the most vulnerable members of the human family are welcomed and protected."

Wisconsin Right to Life legislative director Susan Armacost chimed in and added, "If people care about protecting human life, they shouldn’t vote for Tom Barrett."

"Barrett is a pro-abortion James Doyle re-run – magnified – on right-to-life issues. Barrett voted pro-abortion throughout his entire legislative career including keeping minor girls’ abortions a secret from parents and keeping partial-birth abortions legal. Radical pro-abortion organizations like Planned Parenthood can always rely on Barrett to support its deadly agenda and have given him their enthusiastic endorsement," Armacost continued.

Barrett benefitted from two pro-abortion fundraisers featuring Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business.
