Lansing, MI (LifeNews.com) — Two pro-abortion groups in Michigan announced today they are endorsing Virg Bernero in the Democratic primary for governor. Meanwhile, Right to Life of Michigan has been supporting Republican hopeful Mike Cox, who is also facing a crowded primary election.
Bernero has received the support of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan and the Michigan National Organization for Women.
He faces House Speaker Andy Dillon for the Democratic nomination and Dillon is campaigning as a pro-life candidate for the upcoming August 3 primary election, though Right to Life of Michigan officials say that’s not the case.
In a press release the pro-abortion groups said Berner would work as governor to "protect a woman’s right to choose."
Meanwhile, Right to Life of Michigan has been supporting current state Attorney general Mike Cox in his bid for the GOP nomination to take on Bernero or Dillon. Cox faces a crowded primary field including pro-life Congressman Peter Hoekstra
RLM endorsed Mike Cox twice in his winning state-wide campaigns for attorney general.
"As Attorney General, he defended Michigan’s ban on partial birth abortion to the U.S. Supreme Court despite the governor’s opposition. He has defied Governor Granholm by immediately filing a lawsuit challenging the national health care law which includes federal funding of abortion," RLM president Barb Listing said.
Listing added, "Without doubt, his office has been the most responsive Attorney General’s office to our pro-life goals in the post Roe era. As governor, Mike Cox will provide leadership in calling for the defense of innocent life and will use the powers of the executive office to institute administrative measures to protect the unborn."
She explained that sometimes in a primary it makes sense to make an endorsement to help the candidate with the best chance of winning the November election.
"Their endorsement choice was based upon candidate questionnaires, confidential personal interviews, strength of the campaigns. The choice was made by an experienced board of dedicated volunteers who have no other motive than attempting to do their best in advancing our life principles and goals," she said.
Four of the five candidates who filed for the election had been endorsed by the RLM-PAC in past elections – Mike Bouchard, Mike Cox, Tom George and Pete Hoekstra.
An EPIC-MRA poll currently shows Cox with 26 percent compared with 24 percent for Hoekstra Bouchard at 16 percent and Rick Snyder , whom RLM says is not pro-life, with 20 percent. The same poll has Dillon ahead of Bernero 34-24 percent.
