Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Raising awareness about how abortion is decimating the black community, Alveda King, the niece of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is leading new Freedom Rides. Calling the Pro-Life Freedom Rides "the next major civil rights campaign," King is urging "people of goodwill to join" them.

The Freedom Riders of 1961 made history as they took their lives in their hands to protest the injustice of segregation.

This summer, a group of black pro-life advocates will join leaders of the Catholic pro-life group Priests for Life to stage pro-life Freedom Rides among some of the same routes used decades ago.

"People are invited to join us on July 23 for a powerful concert in Birmingham, Alabama and a focused prayer rally and more prayer in Atlanta, Georgia," King said.

The Freedom Riders took their action to test a Supreme Court ruling that struck down segregation laws.

The African-American leaders say they ride to protest the Roe v. Wade ruling issued by the same Supreme Court that allowed the destruction of another class of human beings.

While the Freedom Riders sought to change the culture of racism in the United States, King says she and her colleagues seek to transform the culture of death into the culture of life.

“My Uncle Martin had a dream that Protestants and Catholics and Gentiles and Jews would join together and sing the age old spiritual ‘Free at Last,’” she told LifeNews.com. "We urge all people of good will to join us as we link the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th Century to the heart cry for life in the 21st Century.”

After the event, King and the pro-life leaders will head to the Jubilee Fest, a "Christian Woodstock" featuring music, ministry, camping and more.

King will join her colleague, Father Denis Wilde, an associate director with Priests for Life, along with worship leader Dr. Ron Kenoly; Dr. David Jerimaiah, Dr. Josh McDowell; and "many talented speakers, comedians, artists and musicians of every Christian style."

"Coming right after our Pro-Life Freedom Rides on July 23," Jubilee Fest is a wonderful part of the summer campaign for Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness that is moving across America," King said.

King also said that "there is a wave of passionate ‘come to Jesus’ messages sweeping across America. Procreative lifestyles including ending abortion, strengthening marriage, and accepting good stewardship as part of economic recovery is a theme that is resounding across our nation."

King, Pavone, and other pro-life advocates will then be praying with leaders and members of America’s communities, including a rally on the Mall in Washington on August 28.

That marks the anniversary of the "I Have A Dream" Speech, led by her famous uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
