Alan Mollohan of West Virginia Faces Pro-Life Ad on Pro-Abortion Health Care Vote

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — With one week left before West Virginia voters head to the polls in their primary election, a pro-life women’s group is running an ad in the congressional district of Allan Mollohan. The Susan B. Anthony List wants voters to know that the normally pro-life Democrat voted for the pro-abortion health care bill.
The bill Congress passed and Obama approved contains massive taxpayer funding of abortions and it passed with just a few votes to spare, including Mollohan’s.
Today, the Susan B. Anthony List launched a $30,000 radio ad campaign targeting Rep. Alan Mollohan on what it calls his "retreat from his pro-life stance in the final hours of the health care debate."
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund, told LifeNews.com about the reasons for the radio spots.
"In the days leading up to the healthcare reform vote, we warned all Members of Congress that a vote for the bill was a vote for federal funding of abortion," she said. "So-called ‘pro- life’ Democrats led by Rep. Bart Stupak, including Rep. Mollohan, shrunk from their principles and cast a vote resulting in the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade."
"We promised Rep. Mollohan that we would make his re-election incredibly painful if he voted ‘yes’ on the bill–and we are following through on that promise," Dannenfelser said.
"Once a true champion of the pro-life movement, Rep. Mollohan has disappointed us by choosing party over principle and the will of his pro-life constituents," she told LifeNews.com. "The Susan B. Anthony List will continue to expose Rep. Mollohan’s pro-abortion vote until Election Day."
The script of the radio commercial reads as follows:
It was the ultimate betrayal. Congressman Alan Mollohan told us he was pro-life.
Mollohan promised us he would protect the unborn. That he would keep abortion funding out of health care. That he would stand with us.
But Alan Mollohan betrayed us…and voted to spend federal dollars — our dollars — on abortions.
Previously, Rep. Mollohan served as co-chairman of the House Pro-Life Caucus.
His re-election primary is on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 and he faces state Sen. Mike Oliverio in the Democratic primary and potentially the winner of a crowded Republican primary.
