Mumbai, India (LifeNews.com) — An India doctor has been arrested in a newly-reported case of a botched abortion that killed a woman. The is the latest case of an abortion in India claiming the life of a woman as other cases have recently come to light of post-abortion problems for women.

The cases come even as abortion advocates suggest making abortions legal makes them safer.

The Times of India indicates the Vikhroli police recently registered a case of medical malpractice against Dr. Vinod Ganpati Prabhu.

Prabhu did an abortion on a woman who was three months pregnant in April 2006 at the Priya Maternity Home.

The newspaper indicates a panel of five doctors from JJ Hospital investigated the failed abortion and submitted their report to police on December 30, asking that Prabhu be charged.

"According to the report, the patient died of negligence in administering proper treatment that resulted in infection after abortion," deputy commissioner of police R M Vhatkar told the Times. "The woman was three-months pregnant when with her husband’s consent, she decided to abort the child as she was not keeping good health."

Sunita Kaur, 25, had the abortion was discharged the same day as the abortion operation. However, her condition soon worsened and she was sent to a maternity home.

"But the doctor said her condition was normal. We returned home and the same evening she died," her husband Vijay Kaur told the newspaper.

Vhatkar, the police official, indicated Prabhu did not have the proper license to be allowed to do abortions.

Last month, LifeNews.com reported on another Indian woman who died from a botched legal abortion recently and was at least the third to die from a legal abortion and have her case make the Indian media.
