Florida Pro-Life Group Calls on Governor Crist to Sign Abortion-Ultrasound Bill

Tallahassee, FL (LifeNews.com) — Florida Right to Life is calling on Governor Charlie Crist to not veto a pro-life bill that helps women by allowing them a chance to see an ultrasound of their unborn child before an abortion. The bill is coming under heavy attack from abortion advocates and the media, which is misrepresenting the legislation.
State legislators support the bill to help women obtain more information before making a decision to have an abortion.
Though the measure doesn’t require women to see the ultrasound — it gives them the option — Crist, pro-abortion groups and media outlets claim it does.
Carrie Eisnaugle, the president of Florida Right to Life, sent a letter to Crist asking him to sign the legislation.
"I am writing to request that you allow HB 1143 to become law," she wrote.
"This bill will help women considering an abortion, by giving the woman more information regarding the procedure she is considering and what it will do. I know many women who regret their abortion, because they later found out the truth about the baby developing inside them," the letter says.
Eisnaugle added, "Discovering the truth after the fact has caused many women great emotional and psychological harm and distress. Of course for some women having an ultrasound would not affect their decision either way. And many women will refuse to see the ultrasound images, which is their choice."
"So this legislation simply allows a woman to have as much information available to her as possible, if she wants that information, so she can know she is making the right decision for herself, which may prevent later harm to the woman and may save a baby’s life," she wrote.
The same bill would also make Florida the next state to opt out of at least some of the taxpayer funding of abortion contained in the health care bill President Barack Obama signed into law.
Eisnaugle touched on that in her letter the group provided to LifeNews.com.
"In addition, this bill prevents taxpayer funding of abortion, which is extremely unpopular with the people. A December 23, 2009 Quinnipiac poll found that 72 percent of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortions," she wrote the governor.
She said: "I believe that in your heart you know allowing this legislation to pass is the right thing to do. I also know that you are under tremendous pressure to veto the bill."
"Please consider the suffering you may prevent and the lives you may save – just think, someday a child may come to you and say, "Governor, because my mother saw that ultrasound, she knew I was a person and she decided to let me live. I have you to thank, sir, because if you had not passed that law, my mother would not have seen me. Governor, you saved my life," the letter from the Right to Life leader concluded.
