Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — New that pro-abortion President Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize today was quickly condemned by a variety of pro-life groups. They said that Obama’s aggressive promotion of abortion and abortion funding disqualified him from receiving the award.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue said the prize shows how abortion continues to haunt Obama.

"President Obama cannot have it both ways," Donohue told LifeNews.com. " Unlike another Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Mother Teresa, who said abortion was ‘the greatest destroyer of peace,’ Obama has never indicated that abortion undermines the cause of peace."

"Indeed, he champions abortion as if it were a sacred right. If he wants to pivot at this juncture, Catholics will welcome it. If he doesn’t, he will have to live with the consequences," Donohue said.

Longtime conservative and pro-life advocate Richard Viguerie told LifeNews.com that everyone involved in issuing the Nobel prize awards "should be embarrassed and ashamed for using this Prize to advance a radical, leftist agenda."

He said the abortion advocates abroad "know what most Americans don’t know–that the American president is a kindred spirit who they recognize as one of their own."

"Freedom-loving people should no longer respect or take seriously the Nobel Peace Prize Committee," Viguerie continued. "The award has been cheapened beyond repair and the Nobel Committee has insulted all who labor and sacrifice for true peace and freedom under God’s laws."

Mathew Staver, of the pro-life legal group Liberty Counsel, told LifeNews.com that the prize doesn’t make sense because "Obama is the most divisive President in American history."

"He seems to relish in promoting radical policies and ideas that drive a wedge between people who hold contrasting beliefs and values," he said. "Obama will be known as President of the Divided States, because he has taken a radical stance in the culture war. He is on the wrong side of life, morality, and liberty."

Although Obama won the Nobel Prize, "he has done nothing to advance peace in this Nation or abroad. When abroad, he apologizes for America and is embarrassed by American exceptionalism. Domestically, Obama promotes a culture war. He is not the symbol of peace.

Even pro-life advocates internationally condemned the award.

If she were alive today, Mother Teresa would return her Nobel Prize in response to today’s award to Barack Obama, John Smeaton, the head of the British pro-life group Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), told LifeNews.com.

"This is the same Barack Obama, one of whose first actions as president was to sign an order to abort the world’s poor, giving hundreds of millions of dollars to bodies that promote population control via abortion," he said.

"In my opinion, Mother Teresa would return her Nobel Prize in response to today’s award to Barack Obama, ‘the abortion president,’" he said.
