Pro-Life Group to Continue Ads Targeting Harry Reid Over Abortion, Health Care

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — A pro-life women’s group that has been targeting Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on abortion and health care is renewing its campaign. The Susan B. Anthony List has run commercials in Nevada saying Reid is abandoning his supposedly pro-life stance on abortion.
The group’s commercials note that Reid once more consistently voted pro-life in the Senate but has abandoned that position of late.
The ads say the latest evidence is Reid’s apparent refusal to support efforts to make sure neither the Kennedy nor the Baucus health care bills contain massive abortion subsidies and mandates, as they do now.
Two weeks ago, 16 pro-life leaders joined SBA to sign a letter to Reid demanding that he stop abortion funding in the health care bills or quit claiming to hold a pro-life position.
"As we move forward in the health care debate, however, we are disappointed in your lack pro-life leadership on this issue. Without an explicit exclusion for abortion coverage, the President’s health care reform proposal will result in the greatest expansion of government-backed abortion since Roe v. Wade," the letter said. "As Senate Majority Leader, you are in a key position to ensure that women and unborn children are protected.’
"Because Reid has refused to acknowledge the request from the pro-life coalition on behalf of his constituents, we are planning to air the ads again this fall, as the health care debate moves forward," SBA informed LifeNews.com today.
The letter continued, "Should you pledge to sponsor and support such explicit exclusion of abortion coverage, the Susan B. Anthony List has agreed to take down the television ad that is currently being aired in Nevada asking you to ensure abortion coverage is excluded."
Because Reid has not done so, SBA intends to continue running the commercial in the Las Vegas and Reno markets.
"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he’s pro-life but he voted to use U.S. tax dollars to fund overseas abortions. He also voted to deny health care to deny health care to unborn children of low income women," the ad explains.
"Now Harry Reid is pushing a massive government-run health care system requiring taxpayer funding for abortions. And he won’t allow doctors or nurses the right to object," the SBA ad continues. "Harry Reid says he’s pro-life, so call him and tell him this time to vote that way."
