Austin, TX (LifeNews.com) — A Texas pro-life group is squarely in the corner of Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and says pro-life voters should make his name as he seeks re-election. The endorsement is important because the position, unlike in other states, is more important than the position of governor in some ways.
"Texas Right to Life is thrilled that Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst will seek re-election," the statewide organization said in an email to LifeNews.com.
"The Texas Right to Life Political Action Committee proudly endorses his re-election bid since Dewhurst has been a stalwart and effective defender of innocent human life in our state government," the pro-life group added.
When he was sworn in as Lieutenant Governor in 2003, Dewhurst pledged to follow a pro-life agenda and TRTL says he has kept his word.
"In 2003, his first act was to appoint the committees in the State Senate, and he ensured pro-life majorities on the committees through which pro-life bills pass," the group noted.
The 2003 78th Legislative Session yielded the passage of three major pro-life bills plus other measures to protect life.
TRTL says Dewhurst cleared the way for Senator Tommy Williams to pass the Womans Right to Know Act, which is Texas version of informed consent before abortion; the law also requires a 24-hour waiting period.
"This is only one of the many victories for life won by Dewhurst in 2003," the pro-life group said.
In 2005, Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst ensured that the state budget included funds for the landmark program that provides assistance and counseling to pregnant women and their young children. Since then, Texas funds alternatives to abortion.
"In 2009, to the extreme vexation of Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocates, the funds for this program were increased by 60 percent," TRTL explained.
Dewhurst has earned two awards from Texas Right to Life during his tenure.
"In 2000, he received Texas Right to Lifes prestigious Horizon Award since we recognized then that he was a rising star in the pro-life movement," the pro-life organization said. "In 2005, he was acknowledged by Texas Right to Life with the Pro-Life Leader of the Year Award."
"David Dewhurst consistently shepherds the Pro-Life bills through to passage in the State Senate," TRTL concluded.
"He is personally committed to restoring the sanctity of innocent human life in Texas. Texas Right to Life is proud to endorse his candidacy for re-election for Lieutenant Governor. Without David Dewhurst at the helm of our State Senate, these accomplishments for life would not have materialized," it said.
